Click to play videoNew Delhi: The newly released alcohol map released by Union Health minister Anbumani Ramadoss claims that the people in Kerala drink the most liquor per capita in the entire country.
It also mentions that Kerala tops the list of road accidents in the country and the report makes no hesitation in linking the two.
“Earlier only villains used to drink alcohol. Now the heroes are drinking all the time,” says Ramadoss.
The alcohol atlas depends mainly on newspapers reports and localised studies. It quotes a study done by NIMHANS, Bangalore that says people who drink are much more likely to indulge in gambling and lottery. It says that Indians on an average have five drinks per sitting and it is no wonder then that they have to buy lotteries often and gamble a bit too.
It can't be cheap drinking, if the report is indeed correct.
However, on the serious side, this report, with all its apparent problems points to some worrying facts that women are catching up with men in alcohol consumption and the age for drinking is falling rapidly.
According to the health minister the four most serious health risks in the country are tobacco, drugs, junk food and alcohol. He has known to campaign against tobacco and junk food, however this time his target is alcohol and his next move is to urge the I&B ministry for a complete ban on surrogate advertising.
