Aligarh: Women and children in Aligarh were beaten up mercilessly by the police when they protested against the alleged rape and murder of a 6-year-old. As if the police action wasn't shocking enough, the Aligarh SSP went on to question how could the rape be proven as no one had seen it happen.

"The situation is now under control. This area is very populated, lots of families live here. How can we decide whether the girl was raped or not? Did someone see it happen," Aligarh SSP Amit Pathak said.

There was a brutal police crackdown in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, as residents protested against the death of a 6-year-old girl whose body was found on Thursday morning. As the protesters vented their anger on the police for inaction, the police lashed out in force, even targeting the mother of the child. According to reports, the police had even refused to file a complaint when the girl first went missing Wednesday night.

"The girl went missing at 3:30 am. Her body was found at 5 am. At 7 am, the locals started demanding that the accused be arrested. How can the police search for the accused in 2 hours," askes Arun Kumar, ADG, Law and Order.

Political parties were quick to express outrage or in the ruling Samajwadi Party's case, defend themselves. "Police have broken all limits in Aligarh. There is jungle raj in UP," BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said. However, SP leader Ram Ashrey Kushwaha said, "There is no law and order problem in UP. We are short of police officers. If some officer takes law in his hand, strong action is taken against him."

By Thursday evening, however, the UP administration had swung into action, suspending 21 government officials including several policemen. But by then the damage to Aligarh's residents and the administration's image had been done.
