'All decision after meeting with CPI-M'

Kolkata: The crisis in the Left Front in West Bengal seems to have blown over after Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee conceded that from now on all major government decisions would be vetted by partners of the CPI-M.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose addressed the media after a three-hour meeting at the CPI-M headquarters in Kolkata. His message was brief - police would be withdrawn from Nandigram, and no land would be acquired there.

It must have embarrassed the Chief Minister, but the CPI-M had to give ground to placate its partners. But most importantly, thanks to the Nandigram controversy, the smaller parties in the Front have secured greater say in the functioning of the government.

Revolutionary Socialist Party MLA Kshiti Goswami said, “For now for major decisions there will be Left Front meeting and after taking resolutions from the Left Front, government will function. ”

Partners of the CPI-M, who had earlier threatened to pull out of the government for keeping them in the dark, have now agreed to smoke the peace pipe.

With this, the smaller Left parties seem to have exacted their pound of flesh from the Nandigram issue but they might ask for a little more.

Meanwhile, a nine-member NDA team led by LK Advani visited Nandigram on Saturday. They said what they saw was different from what they had heard.

Leader of the Opposition LK Advani said, Marxists are behaving like colonialists.”

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was under intense pressure over the past few days. His government might have survived the crisis but Nandigram appears to have caused the CPI-M's first major rift with the electorate.
