New Delhi: The wheel has come a full circle for Samajwadi Party General Secretary, Amar Singh. From being "neither friends or enemy" with Congress President Sonia Gandhi a couple of months ago, Amar Singh is now on a mission to ensure that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) becomes a bigger coalition.
He is flying across the country seeking support from various party leaders like Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, JD(S) leader Dewe Gowda, south mega-star-turned-politician Chiranjeevi and AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa to strengthen the UPA camp.
Amar Singh's efforts have resulted in Mamata Banerjee agreeing to support the ruling coalition.
Driving in his own Mercedes Benz towards the Singur TATA Plant, Amar Singh has made it a point to share the same platform with her in her agitation against the TATAs.
Many say it may be a way to get back at the Left.
Meanwhile, the Congress party, which heads the UPA coalition at the Centre, has been all praises for Singh's efforts.
"He is an experienced leader. We welcome all his actions and initiatives," Congress Spokesperson Manish Tiwari said.
While in Delhi, Amar Singh has been busy writing letters to the Prime Minister's Office batting for Anil Dirubhai Ambani Group, Anil Ambani. But those who used to be his friends are calling his latest overdrive 'simple political opportunism'.
"People will see through this," CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury said.
In his political career, Amar Singh has made a mark for himself by converting adversity into an opportunity. By trying to emerge as a strategist for the Congress, he is, perhaps, also sending a message that he is has indeed come a long way ever since he was turned out from 10 Janpath four years ago.
