All connected with film underdogs:Anil Kapoor

Mallika Kapur, CNN-IBN

Actor Anil Kapoor who plays Prem Kumar - the wily game show host in the film Slumdog Millionaire talks about his experience of working in the film, his association with the film's director Danny Boyle and also how the film has garnered world wide acclaim.

Mallika Kapur: How are you feeling after the nominations were announced?

Anil Kapoor: It's like a dream. The entire team never expected this film to have this kind of response, this kind of appreciation. We are overwhelmed, we are honoured, we are happy, we are excited - and what do I say? There are no words to really describe what we are feeling at the moment.

Mallika Kapur: The people here in Dharavi, do they have any idea about the movie, about all the awards, all the attention?

Anil Kapoor: They are aware of this film - Slumdog Millionaire and Slumdog Crorepati. The entire hype from the Golden Globes and the awards, all the promos and the hype that is going on on the television - of course somewhere there is an identification of the film because I am there in the film.

Mallika Kapur: Tell us more about working with Danny Boyle.

Anil Kapoor: We did not try to choreograph anything. Danny has never tried to choreograph anything, so whatever you see is realistic, but the story of the film is definitely a fairy tale. It's a love story basically.

Mallika Kapur: Do you think this is a movie that's finally made Hollywood pay attention to Indian cinema?

Anil Kapoor: Absolutely. As a matter of fact when Danny Boyle went on stage, that's what he said that it's the correct fusion of Bollywood and H ollywood come together. It's about this underdog who goes and becomes a millionaire and gets his childhood sweetheart and I think we all who are connected with this film are underdogs and suddenly we've got this recognition all over the world.

Mallika Kapur: Do you think there's a little bit of Jamaal in every young man in Mumbai?

Anil Kapoor: Of course, I think I am Jamal, I play Prem Kumar in the film but somewhere I think every child - in the slums, living anywhere in the city - has a dream. It's a city of opportunity.
