New Delhi: Caught with allegations in the Suryanelli gangrape case, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson PJ Kurien has written to Congress President Sonia Gandhi. He has said that the allegations on him in the Suryanelli gangrape case are political vendetta.
This comes amidst increasing clamour for Kurien's resignation after allegations against him. On Monday, one of the convicts in the case had claimed that he was actually involved in the case. The third convict in the case SS Dharmarajan made the revelation while speaking to a local television channel from an undisclosed location in Mysore.
Dharmarajan said that he had taken PJ Kurien in his own car to Kumili, where the girl was kept in confinement and raped. He claimed that the police did not record Kurien's name despite him telling them and that the then investigation officer Sibi Matthews asked him not to take Kurien's name. He also claimed that Kurien had been kept away from the identification parade. The revelations by the convict lead one to believe that the investigations into the case at some point were derailed.
A special court in Kottayam has issued for a fresh warrant against convict SS Dharmarajan. Dharmarajan had earlier jumped parole and is absconding.
Meanwhile, on Monday, protests were staged outside the Kerala Assembly demanding Kurien's removal. The police had to fire teargas shells to quell the protests.
