Uneasy silence in Cong after Alva's exit

New Delhi: Within moments of senior Congress leader Margaret Alva's resignation, her nameplates have disappeared from the Congress headquarters. She no longer holds the powerful post of General Secretary in-charge of seven states and is neither a Congress Working Committee member now.

The story does not end there. The question lingers as to why Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is reluctant to order a probe into Alva's allegation that tickets were sold in Karnataka elections.

Alva has been saved the embarrassment of facing the disciplinary committee, so in that sense she has got an honourable exit. But the question mark over Congress's claim of being a transparent and democratic party remains.

Now Alva may have been silenced but not others. All India Congress Committee’s Scheduled Castes cell president Yogendra Makwana has alleged that Alwar rural seat was sold for Rs 2.5 crore.

Yet, Congress is adamant that there will be no probe. Just a silent warning has been sent out that those airing their grievances will face a similar fate as Alva.

“This is a signal that there will be zero intolerance for any indiscipline committed by any individual in the party,” Moily said.

But if the BJP was gleefully watching these developments, it soon realised that its own house was not in order either.

BJP MLAs in Rajasthan have alleged that the ticket for the Khetri constituency was sold. Supporters of MLA Data Ram Gujjar staged a demonstration outside the BJP office in Jaipur on Monday.

Congress is satisfied that at least one voice of dissent has been silenced, but with Lok Sabha elections drawing closer, the whimpers within the BJP and Congress could turn into a roar. And disgruntlement leads to uneasy disclosures.
