Chandigarh: What's blossoming between Pakistani journalist Aroosa Alam and former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh? The ruling Akalis and even sections of Singh's Congress are asking this question.
The murmurs began as the two were spotted together on a number of occasions. On Monday, the question was posed even in the Assembly. Now, Aroosa has jumped to Singh's defence.
“There is nothing more to our relationship. We are just good friends. I made some remarks about Amarinder being a charming man and my not minding marrying him, but they were all in lighter vein,” Aroosa said.
The Akalis say Singh should be more careful about the new friends he makes. They claim that Aroosa could be an ISI agent, however Singh has rubbished the charges.
“If I have a friend in Pakistan, I don’t understand why is it anybody's problem. It is narrow-minded thinking,” Singh said.
But his denials seem to be having no effect. State Congress chief Rajinder Kaur Bhattal advised Amarinder not to do anything that harms the party's reputation and that's what the Akalis, too, are saying.
“All I can say is that such things don’t suit a former chief minister,” advisor to Punjab Chief Minister, DS Cheema said.
Aroosa’s past visits to Punjab have created much controversy. On Wednesday, she tried to clear the air but perhaps raised more questions than she answered.
