The theme of the night was charity and the performances were not by the regular contestants. The night saw Jack Black of School of Rock fame attempt an impromptu number.
Other highlights included a Simpsons Parody of the reality show and a flashback to American Idol in the 60s with none other than Celine Dion and Elvis Presley.
And with some celebrity messages thrown in for a good cause, the night hoped to raise a few million dollars for charity.
One of USA's most watched shows American Idol attracts over 37 million viewers per telecast.
