Kolkata: It's been 4 days since the horrific fire took place at the AMRI hospital where the death toll stands at 91 but one family is still looking for their loved one. The body continues to be untraceable and his name is also not on the dead persons list.
24-year old Paritosh Das's first visit to Kolkata turned out to be his worst nightmare. A resident of Agartala, Tripura, this daily wage earner accumulated his life's savings to get his elder brother Santosh Das admitted to the AMRI hospital.
Injured in the head and a leg after a scooter accident, Santosh underwent surgery at AMRI on the 8th of December. His family sold its entire property in Agartala to raise money for the surgery and deposited over Rs 1 lakh with the hospital.
A day after the surgery, Santosh perished in the fire that claimed more than 90 lives. But Paritosh has still not found his brother's body. His family has already searched 21 hospitals in the city, including the SSKM hospital where the autopsies of the AMRI bodies were held, but have failed to identify Santosh.
"We sold our house thinking if we could take my brother back, then we will get a chance of building a new house," Paritosh Das said.
Dulal Debnath, Santosh Das's relative, says, "The family now has no means to support itself. Even I do not have the means to support them."
Of all the AMRI victims, the plight of the Das family seems to be the worst. It is now up to the government agencies to find the body and provide some solace to the bereaved hearts.
At the government-organized memorial for AMRI victims on Monday, the desperate family pleaded with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to help them find the body.
Mamata Banerjee said, "We won't be able to bring the dead back to life. But it's our responsibility to offer a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and a government job to the willing relatives of the victims."
Paritosh, who was at the hospital when the fire broke out, says he could have saved his brother had he not been stopped by the hospital guards from entering the ward. His biggest worry now - how to face his elderly parents if he returned without his brother's body.
