Click to play videoKolkata: Speaking to news reporters on Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lashed out at FICCI saying the state did not want an industry that killed people.
"A chamber has said that the directors of AMRI should be released. I want to tell them that we want industry here, but we do not want industry that will kill people.
"A murderer's identity is that of a murderer, a terrorist is a terrorist. I cannot pardon someone on grounds that the person has a different identity," she said.
Three weeks after the directors of Kolkata's AMRI Hospital were taken into custody after a fire in the hospital’s basement claimed 89 lives, industry body FICCI slammed the arrest of 7 hospital directors as ‘anti-industry’, and not 'completely non-discriminatory'.
In a strongly worded statement, FICCI demanded the immediate release of those who were not responsible in the day-to-day operations of the business. It said it would prevent the spread of negative sentiments among investors.
FICCI said it was important to ensure that no overt or covert victimization of people took place in the name of justice.
It argued that offenders must be punished only after an objective and transparent enquiry finds them guilty.
Seven AMRI directors, who were arrested and charged with culpable homicide, are currently in judicial custody. The December 9 fire at the hospital killed over 90 people, most of them patients.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the West Bengal police announced compensation to families of 29 of the dead. The compensation to the rest would be given after verification of documents, said the Kolkata police commissioner.
