'Anand should've been No. 1 way back'

Vishwanathan Anand has finally become the number one chess player in the world after FIDE, the world chess governing body re-calculated their rankings. CNN-IBN Correspondent Veeraraghav caught up with his proud father in Chennai.

K Viswanathan: It's a great feeling. Though I was expecting him to get it much earlier, but I'm glad that he has got it now. It is his one of his long dreamt achievements and I'm really proud of him.

Veeraraghav: What is it that perhaps defines this victory to you?

K Viswanathan: It is a clear indication of his personality. Firstly, he is a born gentleman. And secondly, if he is determined, he goes at it all the time. And this achievement has come to him because of the determination. He continued to play top-class chess. He continued to be in the top three for the past eight years. one may have been avoiding him, but he got it ultimately.

Veeraraghav: As a father to son, has there been a time that he has been very sad?

K Viswanathan: He says in game, you keep trying and you only achieve it when you deserve it. That's exactly what he said. He is not concerned about results at all. He keeps on trying.

Veeraraghav: Is there anything that you would like to say about the controversy that happened, the first position going to someone else earlier?

K Viswanathan: See, we don't know yet. Let the official publication come. Each organisation has got some set up rules. If they are closing the books on February 28 and Linares was a little later, but they could have certainly accommodated Anand. I feel sorry about that, that's all. Otherwise, each organisation has got its own module. All's well that ends well.
