Anatomy of a murder: How Prof Sabharwal died

Ujjain (MP): Murder most foul in broad daylight: That was how people across the country saw the case of Professor Sabarwal death in Ujjain three years ago.

Now, few days after a court in Nagpur acquitted all the accused in the case, CNN-IBN has got access to a report which shows how the case got manipulated.

The report was prepared by the station officer of Dewas on October 10 2006, a month after Sabharwal's death on August 2006, 26.

Giving graphic details of what happened on that fateful day, the report states:

  • A meeting was on in the college to decide whether elections to the student body should be held or not.
  • Professor Sabharwal was among those who didn't favour elections.
  • A group of NSUI and ABVP activists were outside the college building when news of cancellation of elections reached them.
  • At 1250 hrs IST, a group of NSUI workers walked inside the building and started quarrelling with the college authorities. They were asked to vacate the college premises.
  • After about 45 minutes, ABVP workers came in as well.
  • At about 1415 hrs, Professor Sabharwal made an attempt to get out of the college, asking his peon to take his scooter out.
  • As soon Professor reached gate No. 2 of the college, ABVP activists started beating him up.
  • Seeing this, a group of college professors, policemen, and peons rushed to help him.
  • He was made to sit on a chair on the lawn, as he was salivating in his mouth.
  • When he was taken to the hospital, he was declared brought dead.
  • The report mentions 94 witnesses to incident.
  • All of them turned hostile during the trial.
  • The courts may have declared all the accused as not guilty but does it then mean that professor was not murdered? The question is still a long way from being answered.
