Mumbai: The year 2006 may be drawing to a close but the awards season in the Indian film industry is set to begin.
So, what is the ringside view from the red carpet like and what is the big fuss about award ceremonies?
A sneak peak into one of the award functions held on Sunday in Mumbai, explains the trend. Well, kind of.
Complete with glitz, glamour and well-rehearsed stage performances, all the big stars came together to pick up their “coveted” trophies.
"I always want to get awards at the end of year, but there is a lot of competition,” said actor Shah Rukh Khan.
While SRK is certainly not known for his modesty, his buddy filmmaker Karan Johar’s opinion wasn’t too different either. "I love winning awards and I get very upset when I lose. I get shattered when I don’t get nominated. There is never too many awards,” he said.
Awards functions may have once been about honouring the year's best work, but today the rules seem to have changed.
"It’s not guess work anymore, if you show up there's a big chance you'll win an award,” said actor Arbaz Khan.
Some others may not have many awads to boast of, but have all other reasons to attend a ceremony. "It gives us an opportunity to get dressed and have fun,” said actress Isha Kopikkar.
And some honest confessions too. "If you're winning it’s okay but just to attend it is a bit boring,” said actor Arjun Rampal.
Having said that, it probably was a boring evening for Rampal who went home empty handed.
The award for Sabse Favourite Hero went to Shah Rukh Khan who earned this honour for the fourth consecutive time, while Rani Mukherji took home the trophy for Favourite Actress.
The award for Sabse Favourite Film went may have been a hotly contested category, but in the end, it was the Munnabhai team who went home rewarded.
"It feels good given the kind of work we put in our films," said Rani.
Of course, what's an awards ceremony without a thank-you speech. "The awards are judged by audiences," said director Rajkumar Hirani.
In these days of multiple awards functions, there has to be a favourite award too, right?
“I'm an actor and I have to be diplomatic. All award functions are my favourite and I love all awards," quipped actress Amrita Arora.
But then in Bollywood, isn’t it all about diplomacy anyway?
