New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are reeling under the impact of heavy rains. At least 43 people have been killed in Andhra Pradesh and thousands have been displaced as incessant rains lashed .
Six districts - Kurnool, Anantapur, Karimnagar, Warangal, Guntur and Prakasam - have been getting heavy rainfall for the past three days.
That’s due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Kurnool and Guntur districts account for seven deaths each.
Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy held a high-level meeting on Wednesday to review the situation.
The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh each to the families of those killed.
Rs 5.6 crore have also been released for carrying out immediate relief measures. As many as 29 relief camps have been set up.
In Karnataka too, rains have paralysed life.
At least 19 people are dead in heavy rains. Rivers are flowing above the danger mark in many districts.
The Bhima river in Belgaum has overflowed and flooded neighbouring areas. The Army has been rushed in for rescue operations in Gadag district, one of the worst affected.
Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy is scheduled to go for an aerial survey of the rain-washed regions soon and review relief measures.
The situation was grim in several villages, which are not only battered by incessant rains, but also from water release from upstream rivers, Seetharam said.
Heavy release of water into the Bhima river in Belgaum has caused floods in several areas, he said.
An Army column of the Maratha Light Infantry Regimental Centre, Belgaum, has rushed to Gadag district to assist the civil authorities in flood relief and rescue.
Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy will under take an aerial survey of rain battered Gadag district tomorrow.
He will also review relief measures taken, official sources said.
