Warangal: The body of a 23-year-old engineering student, Devender Kumar was found near the railway tracks in Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh.
The deceased student had previously complained of being ragged, his family says.
The parents are inconsolable as Kumar allegedly threw himself in the path of an oncoming train and committed suicide.
The second-year student at Hyderabad's Vasavi Engineering College was allegedly ragged by seniors and couldn't take it anymore.
The victim’s sister, Naaneshwari said, “He told us about the constant ragging but the college authorities discouraged us from lodging police complaint saying they will handle it.”
But college authorities deny this. They say Devender was a good student but suffered from psychological depression.
The Principal, Vasavi ENgineering College Dr D Changal Raju said, “All these allegations of ragging are untrue. He was suffering from depression and maybe that is why committed suicide.”
Devender's family has now gone to the police. A case of unnatural death has been registered.
The Sub Inspector of Railway Police, Warangal Chaitanya Nader said, “We have recorded the statements and have booked a case against few students as well as the college. His parents say that his room-mates might have ragged him.”
In March, another Andhra college was in the news when a second-year student attempted suicide after she was allegedly asked to strip and dance by her seniors.
The Supreme Court pulled up the Guntur Agricultural College for not taking action. Now less than three months later, ragging has created furore in the state.
