Pune: Sri Lankan allrounder Angelo Mathews has stepped down as Pune Warriors' skipper for the rest of the IPL 6 season.

Mathews, who was appointed as captain before the start of the current season, has formerly given the team's reins to stand-in skipper Aaron Finch.

"I would like to confirm that I have decided to stand-aside as Pune Warriors franchise captain for the rest of the current season to ensure team leadership continuity," Mathews said in a press release on Thursday.

Mathews, who was appointed as captain before the start of the current season, has formerly given the team's reins to stand-in skipper Aaron Finch.

"It is in our best interests that the captaincy is not switched frequently as we strive to achieve the best balanced team for each different opponent. It is therefore best that Aaron [Finch] continues to lead," he added.

Pune have had a disastrous season so far, winning just two and losing eight of their matches. Mathews' form too hasn't been up to the mark as he made just 52 runs in five matches. He couldn't contribute much with the ball too, getting just one wicket.

"I will naturally provide my fullest support at all times to Aaron and my team-mates. I will also continue to work as hard as possible as a player as we all strive to win our remaining matches," Mathews said.

"I am thankful to the franchise for understanding my decision and for all the support received by my fellow team-mates and our fans during the past few weeks."
