Anger mounts against Dhoble as daughter of dead hawker dies

Mumbai: There was double tragedy for the family of the hawker who had died during an anti-encroachment drive led by controversial Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vasant Dhoble, as the hawker's daughter, Radha Jaiswal, died of a heart attack on Sunday.

Blaming it on the death of his father, the hawker's son said, "She had a light fever. But she couldn't bear the loss of her father."

Angry and helpless, the family is holding Mumbai's controversial cop ACP Dhoble responsible for their loss. They claim that Dhoble hit 50-year-old fruitseller Madan during a crackdown on illegal hawkers near Santacruz east railway station on January 11. According to doctors, Madan died of a heart attack.

Following the death of the hawker, Dhoble was immediately transferred to the police control room following a huge row and a police inquiry is also underway. But the death of the fruitseller's daughter has reignited the controversy. Despite repeated attempts by CNN-IBN, Mumbai Police refused to comment on this issue.

The fate of ACP Dhoble hangs in balance. The Chief Minister has hinted that he would be reinstated if he is given a clean chit by the state CID which is probing the matter. But the jury remains divided as Dhoble has equal number of supporters as well as critics.
