Gurgaon: Angry residents of Gurgaon went on protest against unscheduled power cuts on Tuesday. The people had gathered outside an electricity sub-station near Badshahpur protesting against the erratic power supply over the last one month.

Electricity board officials say Tuesday's power cut was extended because sub-station employees refused to work until the authorities had taken action against those responsible for the vandalism.

The protests however point at a larger issue. Gurgaon, a fast growing town of Haryana, does not have enough power for its needs.

Though the daily supply of electricity in Gurgaon is 95 lakh units, the actual demand stands at 120 lakh units. That's a shortfall of 25 lakh units.

And bearing the brunt are thousands of domestic consumers.

In times like these, living in posh localities seems to have its advantages. People say that their societies have its own power backup so that the residents of these areas can at least sleep peacefully at night.

Officials assure that the state is making efforts to meet the shortfall of electricity in Gurgaon, but it will take at least two-three years till the results become visible. Till then, the residents of Gurgaon will have no option but to be left feeling quite powerless.
