Hundreds of activists of the Tamil Nadu Tauheed Jamaat (TNTJ) shouted slogans and burnt the effigy of US President Barack Obama and the US flag near the American consulate here on Saturday.

However, unlike Friday’s events, when protests of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam turned violent, hundreds of police personnel in full riot gear, led by Joint Commissioner of Police S N Seshasai, stopped the sea of TNTJ protesters, estimated to be around 4,000, including 500 women, near the mosque at Thousand Lights. The Tauheed Jamaat cadre raised slogans and burnt the effigy of President Obama. The protesters were taken to New College on Peters Road and released in the evening. Later, 225 activists of the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamaat were arrested when they tried to march towards the consulate. They were released later.
