Ahmedabad: Angry residents of Ahmedabad took to pelting stones at a police station after a hooch tragedy claimed at least seven lives.

Those who died had been victims of illicit liquor joints operated by ruthless bootleggers who operate with impunity even though Gujarat has a blanket ban on liquor.

People blame the police for allowing these illegal breweries to flourish.

The wife of a deceased, Hiraben Solanki said, "The police take money from these bootleggers and that's why this continues."

Angry residents of the locality Gita Mandir now want all the liquor joints around the place shut down as well as the police officers shunted out.

A local resident, Naresh Sindhi said, "Sell poison or whatever, give us our cut, is their attitude to everything."

"Whoever is running these illicit liquor joints, there are neat and regular cuts of commission going to all the police officers," said another resident, Alpesh Badhvi.

People also complain that their vigilant actions or complaints often buy trouble instead of a solution.

"When I raised my voice against bootlegging, the local police carried out no investigations and put me behind bars under Section 151 of the IPC," said Mukesh Padiyar who is a Social Worker.

The Congress here is quick to score a political point. Modi's Gujarat is a dry state but the administration has clearly failed to keep a check on illegal liquor outlets.

.

Leader Of Opposition, Gujarat Assembly, Shaktisinh Gohil said,

"The situation occurred at the nearest point to chief minister Narendra AModi's constituency and that is why the people are very angry."

Many believe the tragedy was just waiting to happen given the easy availability of hooch across most parts of the state.
