Anguished West Bengal Guv writes to CM

New Delhi: An anguished West Bengal Governor, Gopal Krishna Gandhi spoke out once during the Nandigram violence. That didn't go down well with the Buddhadeb government. Now as political killings continue, Gandhi is telling parties across the spectrum that the security of the people cannot be linked to their political affiliation.

Khejuri- Lalgarh-Burdwan- Mangalkot have all been affected. It didn't take long for the violence to follow the verdict. Three months of bloody political clashes have already left 70 dead across the state.

That has prompted the West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi to denounce the political bloodshed and hold out an appeal.

In a strongly worded statement, the Mahatma's grandson called upon political leaders across the spectrum to prevail upon their supporters to "stamp out the fires" breaking out across the State.

"Not a day passes without someone somewhere being killed for his politics. The widow's wail rends each day," Gandhi said in a clear message to the Buddhadeb government.

"The state too will, I am confident instill confidence among the people that their politics and their security are not linked," he added.

This is not the first time that Governor Gandhi has expressed his concern over the deteriorating law and order condition in Bengal. He took on the state government and the CPM at least twice in the past two years over the bloodshed in Nandigram.

The Left was at its sarcastic best when Gandhi criticised the cold horrors in Nandigram two years ago. This time, with CPM at the receiving end in the Maoist dominated regions the CPM is playing safe.

Politburo Member, Sitaram Yechury said, "It is clear in the Governor's statement that the very people who are complaining are also perpetuating violence. "

The Congress called it an indictment of a state government.

Congress leader Keshav Rao said, "We can ask other political parties to behave or co-operate. But necessarily, the responsibility lies with the government."

It is also true that the triumphant Trinamool supporters have been on the rampage in different parts of West Bengal. They want to disarm the CPM cadres before the big Assembly elections of 2011. The Governor's appeal notwithstanding, an end to the political bloodshed in the state is nowhere in sight.
