New Delhi: It was hard to miss in the newspapers: the Anil Ambani's Reliance ADA Group has placed prominent ads questioning the Petroleum Ministry's stance in the gas supply deal between NTPC and Reliance Industries Ltd.
The campaign has created quite a stir, given that the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case in just two weeks from now.
The media blitzkrieg shows it is not just his legal acumen that Anil Ambani is relying upon.
While noted lawyer Ram Jethmalani asked Rajiv Gandhi around 400 questions on the Bofors scandal during a single month in 1987, Anil came up with one of his own on Monday.
Jethmalani defends the move, claiming that public debate takes precedence over legal niceties.
"I don't consider it improper. We do not have trials by jury..But on matters of public interest, the law is that merely because litigation is pending, it is not sufficient to suppress public debate,” Ram Jethmalani
Jethmalani remains adamant that the Government, especially the Petroleum Ministry, has not covered itself in glory in the course of this vexed battle between the Ambani's.
"Now they have come to the SC on the pretence that they are serving public interest. They are not serving public interest. The fact is that the Government has a minimal interest of Rs 500 cr. Anil won't get the gas. This is ridiculous,” said Jethmalani.
Despite the remote possibility of his advice ever being accepted, Jethmalani, a self-confessed friend of the late Dhirubhai Ambani, continues to believe that the two brothers can settle matters.
"I have repeatedly said, go to your mother, touch her feet, take her advice, and act accordingly,” he said.
