New Delhi/London: It's a family squabble that is getting only worse, much to India's horror. The families of recalled diplomat Anil Verma and his wife have now gone public - making ugly charges and counter charges.
Meanwhile the Government confirmed the violent altercation at their home was over just a Christmas tree!
In Varanasi, Anil Verma's family has held their daughter-in-law Paromita squarely responsible for embarrassing him and the country.
"She is trying to frame him. She is of immoral character. We are with Anil. We would convey this to the Government, that she is trying to frame our son. Would ask them to find her background, what kind of a woman she is. She was the reason of divorce from his first marriage. She has spoilt the image of the country, our son," said Ayodhya Prasad, Anil Verma's father.
In Siliguri, Paromita's upset family refuted the allegations.
"We do not know about the incident. We have tried to contact her, but haven't been able to, her mobile phone is switched off," said Mayukh Chowdhury, Paromita's brother.
Meanwhile in London, in an unusual - and rather belated move - the Indian High Commission issued a press release.
According to the report, Verma, a senior IAS officer of West Bengal cadre, joined the High Commission in London on August 24, 2009 and Paromita's mother accompanied the couple.
On December 11, last year, the couple fought over a Christmas tree gifted by her aunt in London and according to the report, Anil Verma claimed his wife hurt her nose when he was trying to remove the tree from their house. But Paromita Verma claimed that she was slapped.
The report also clarified that no officer ever threatened Paromita.
The report further stated that the couple agreed to go for counseling but Paromita later changed her mind and went incommunicado.
Anil Verma, according to the report, also claimed that he was harassed by his wife into leaving his home and also threatened by her family.
The note also suggested that she had an interest in staying back once this story hit the town - for the treatment of her one son and education for the other.
