Srinagar: Another infant has died at the GB Pant Hospital, Srinagar's only paediatric facility, taking the death toll to 359 in five months. The infant died when the state's Medical Education Minister RS Chib was visiting the hospital on Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's orders.

The government acted after CNN-IBN reported on the shortage of the medical staff and facilities and has released funds for an upgrade.

Speaking to CNN-IBN on Wednesday, the Medical Education Minister admitted to the lack of infrastructure at the hospital.

CNN-IBN had reported how the lack of medical care has led to the death of over 62 infants in three months. The hospital is facing an acute shortage of trained staff and medical equipment, the reports said.

The hospital has literally become a death trap. In the past six weeks alone, 30 infants have died due to doctors' negligence and inadequate health equipment to tackle the crisis.

The doctors say they are unable to cope with the huge overload because of a shortage of trained staff and machines. In the ICU, as against a required 20 to 30 ventilators, there are only five.
