Hyderabad: After the emotional farewell, there is a rush to keep YSR's memory alive in Andhra Pradesh. More than a dozen statues of YSR are set to adorn the streets of Hyderabad and the late chief minister's home district Kadappa. The demand for the statues is so high, workers can't keep pace.
During his regime, Dr YSR Reddy made sure that his housing schemes, healthcare schemes or even infrastructure milestones - like the international airport - were all named after members of the Gandhi family.
Following the same mantra, YSR's name will now adorn his pet schemes. The health insurance scheme he started will work from the YSR Bhavan and a university for rural development is also coming up in his name.
Information and PR Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Geeta Reddy says, "Knowing his popularity, everyone - every department, every ministry in the state - wants to do something in his name."
Even the multi-crore BHEL-NTPS power project in Chittor district may soon be named after YSR.
Acting Chief Minsiter, K Rosaiah says, I have written a letter to the Centre asking for approval to name the BHEL project after Dr Reddy."
The Congress maintains it's merely paying tribute to the man who single-handedly managed the faction-ridden state unit, but critics worry that it may be going just a little overboard.
Political analyst, Haragopal says, "I see it as part of political bankruptcy and desperate search for a symbol."
