Vishakapatnam: In what could be yet another case of unethical drug trials, two engineering students of Vishakapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh have accused a drug research company of luring them as volunteers on the pretext of an educational project and a payment of Rs 6,000. The duo allege they were not informed of the process and were forced to stay at the laboratory of Actimus Biosciences, till blood samples were collected. The students say they soon developed nausea and swollen limbs.

"They had taken some tests and after that we came back to Actimus Biosciences. Around 4-5 pm we got our results and they told that we have started the study," said Ajay Kumar, victim/student.

Meanwhile, three people from the company, including the Chief Executive Officer have been arrested but the company says the allegations baseless, claiming that they have the licence to conduct such trials and that the students' consent was taken.

"People generally check in to the facility tweleve hours prior to the dose and then they are stationed in the facility for 24 hours," said B Srinivas, Actimus Biosciences Private limited.

The police is now in the process of verifying the claims of the company and the two complainants.

Less than a month ago, five women had fallen ill after an alleged illegal clinical trials in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh. With the state administration continuing to pass the buck to the Drug Control Authority of India, the concern is will the on-ground officials be able to stem the increasing number of drug trial victims.
