New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday stopped all building and construction activities in the upcoming Noida park, which is also being developed as a memorial for Dalit leader Kanshi Ram and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.
A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice S.H. Kapadia and Justice Aftab Alam imposed the ban on construction activities till October 26. The order is seen as a setback to the Mayawati government.
The ban was imposed during the hearing of an application by apex court-appointed Central Empowered Committee which had objected to the development of the park after cutting down over 6,000 trees.
The apex court had earlier stayed construction work at various Dalit memorials in Lucknow but the state government had reportedly violated the court's order for which the Uttar Pradesh chief secretary has been asked to appear before the Supreme Court.
