Back in 2006, Mohit Chauhan, the lead singer of the now-defunct band Silk Route, got the then president to share five of his poems for a new album, Kala:m that he planned to come up with.
“I got my first opportunity to sing this song on CNN-IBN. Thanks to you guys for that,” Mohit says
Since Mohit's band days are long over, he has put the album together as a solo artist with help from old musician friends like Kenny Puri and Atul. But it’s the deep yet soothing lyrics that stem from Kalam's poetry that fuel this piece of work.
“There’s a song called Prayer for the Departed Children of Kumbakonam. Kumbakonam is a place is Tamil Nadu, where a fire had broken out claiming the lives of lots of little kids. Kalam sahab had gone there and, I think, he got moved by it and he wrote this little ode to the children of Kumbakonam,” Mohit says.
While the album will definitely give Kalam's poems a new platform, it will also be a boost to the singer who's already on a roll in Bollywood, thanks to his super hit track Tumse Hi Din Hota Hai from the movie Jab We Met.
