Click to play videoJammu: It's raining apples all over Kashmir. Every tree in every apple orchard is bent over with the fruit, and no one's keeping away, not the doctors, not the children, and certainly not the journalists.
Fruit growers in Kashmir say their apples are doing even better than the more famous Himachal apples in markets in Delhi and Punjab.
“We grow three times more apples than Himachal. So if you find more apples in Punjab it is because we have more yield,” says President of Jammu and Kashmir Fruit Dealers association
Kashmir produces 14 tons of apples every year, and makes more than Rs 2,250 crore from the forbidden fruit. Horticulture experts say Kashmir's apples can compete with those from China and New Zealand with a little technical know-how.
“If we get the cold chain refrigeration and good scientific backup, we will do much better,” says Horticulture expert Imtiyaz Lone.
