Appointment of Ragupathy as Forum chief upheld

The appointment of Justice R Ragupathy, a retired judge of the High Court, as president of the TN Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, was upheld by the Madras HC on Friday. A division bench comprising Justice KN Basha and Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar, which upheld the appointment, also pulled up petitioner Vijayalakshmi Shanmugam for making certain remarks against Justice Ragupathy as also against Chief Justice MY Eqbal.

“It is very unfortunate that the petitioner, who claims to be an advocate practising in this High Court, and who has been considered an officer of the court, has come forward with certain unwarranted and contemptuous comments and remarks in the supplementary affidavit dated July 30 last... We make it clear that if such unwarranted averments are made in future, we would be forced to take appropriate action,” the bench warned and dismissed the writ petition.

In her quo-warranto writ petition, Vijayalakshmi submitted that Justice Ragupathy was holding the post of Member of the TN Advisory Board. He was also appoint  ed as one-man commission of inquiry to probe irregularities in the construction of new TN Secretariat complex in December last. Hence, his appointment as chief of the Consumer Commissioner was improper, she said.
