Hyderabad: It's just been three months since Syed Mustafa got both his daughters married.
With the girls married to a set of brothers well settled in Oman, the parents were more than happy.
But the joy was short-lived.
Earlier this week, Sameena and Nazeeya called their father up, begging him to let them return home.
They told him both brothers were epileptic and had lied about having government jobs.
"We did not know any background of the boys, the papers were in Omani, so when we translated, we realised what had happened. We trusted the Qazi and middlemen, but we were cheated," says Mustafa.
The Hyderabad police have arrested two Qazis who performed the marriages on charges of cheating.
A middleman who introduced the two families has also been detained.
"We have done everything as per government rules. It's not our fault," said an accused Qazi, Mohammad Abdul Quereshi.
The last few years have seen an increase in the number of such cases. Activists say poverty, huge demands of dowry from local grooms and the lure of a well settled life abroad is the reason several families don't verify credentials of prospective grooms.
"This incident shows the Wakf board's weakness. They should get strict with Qazis who are mediating with families," says activist Mohammed Farooq.
Nazeeya and Sameena Mustafa are now stranded in Oman. The grooms' family is demanding Rs 70,000 to allow the girls to get back home.
The Mustafas say their daughters now face an uncertain future.
The police and the family are now trying to get in touch with the Oman consulate to ensure the girls are allowed to return to India at the earliest possible.
