Are IT employees latest targets for kidnappers?

New Delhi: Rohit Reddy, a three-year-old son of G Ravinder and Lalasa Reddy, was abducted in the Kondapur area on Tuesday evening.

Police say the kidnappers have demanded a ransom of one crore rupees. Rohit, a kindergarten student of the Harsha Maharishi Vidya Mandir, was last seen at a playground near his home. Eyewitnesses say the kidnappers were driving a black Qualis car.

The incident has shocked IT sector employees, who have become potential targets now, given their large disposable incomes and high profile lifestyles.

The kidnapping comes barely two months after the abduction of a senior level employee of Satyam Computers, Vedula Satyanaraya. He was later set free by the kidnappers.

Rohit's father G Ravinder is with Cognizant Technologies, while his mother Lalasa is a software engineer with Satyam Computers.

"It is a fact that one of our employees has registered a case with the police, stating that his child was missing. We are awaiting further information from the police. Our organisation will extend all help to our employee in this challenging situation," said a spokesperson of Cognizant Technologies.

In November last year, the kidnapping of Adobe CEO Naresh Gupta's son in Noida had created a flutter, particularly in IT circles. There were reports that a ransom was paid to secure the release of the child then.
