Arjun on backfoot after 'Rahul for PM' remark

New Delhi: A day after senior Cabinet Ministers Arjun Singh and Pranab Mukherjee endorsed Rahul Gandhi's name for the Congress's next prime ministerial choice, the Congress high command has sent out a strong message asking for all such demands to stop.

Party spokespersons on Tuesday reaffirmed that Rahul may have established himself as a key figure in the party but he wasn't ready for the Prime Minister's job — just yet — thus reaffirming the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's authority.

Meanwhile, Arjun Singh hastened to clarify that he had not said anything untoward against the Prime Minister. He was speaking to reporters after meeting with Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

"I never made any statement against Manmohan Singh, so I have nothing to clarify. I only said there is no harm in projecting Rahul Gandhi as a future leader," Arjun Singh stated.
