Arjun out to detoxify RSS schools

New Delhi: After emerging as the messiah of the dalits and backwards with the new reservation policy, Arjun Singh is now looking at different constituencies, so he's back to the detoxification drive.

After his quota campaign, HRD minister Arjun Singh is now preparing to launch an offensive against the RSS and educational institutes run by it.

He feels that institutions like the Saraswati Shishu Mandir being run by the RSS are communalising education.

"They have used the Saraswati Shishu Mandir in the way they wanted to. They are using it to vitiate the atmosphere. It is now a challenge for all of us," says he.

It's a tactic that he has used before. Arjun Singh over the years has carefully nurtured this image of being a pro-minority leader within the Congress, but what is baffling to a lot of people is the immediate provocation behind this outburst.

Although the ministry has been sitting on a report on the RSS-run educational institution by a Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) for over a year now, Arjun Singh's fresh offensive against the RSS has obvious political overtones in view of the Uttar Pradesh elections, which are around the corner .

Says BJP leader Arun Jaitley, "It would be better if he used his present tenure to modernise the madrassas rather than destabilise exisiting nationalist institutions."

But just how far is the HRD Minister willing to go with this war of words? The answer to that depends on the political gains that he can make through his latest campaign.
