Army bows down, stops fixing shrines

Srinagar: The Army in J&K on Monday succumbed to the clergy's demand to stop reconstruction of shrines and mosques in the backdrop of a fatwa issued by a top Muslim cleric.

The move by the Army, which they called ‘Operation Sadbhavna’, did not go down too well with the Muslim clerics, and they even asked Muslims to stay away from shrines and mosques renovated by the Army.

Army officers have maintained that the reconstruction was done in good faith as part of Operation Sadbhavana, a campaign to win over the local population.

On Friday more than 70 clerics had said they would launch a campaign against the Army. They said only Muslims could carry out renovation of mosques.

“Non-Muslims cannot contribute for Muslim worship places whether they are in Army or police or civil,” Grand Mufti, Kashmir, Mufti Bashiruddin had told CNN-IBN earlier.

Bashiruddin had issued a fatwa on May 28 asking Army to refrain from interfering in religious places and instead focus on developmental activities.

The Army says it has spent about Rs 52 lakh in the last three years to renovate mosques and Muslim shrines.
