Kashmir: Lance Naik Sanjay Kumar of Jammu and Kashmir Rifles was awarded Param Veer Chakra for his outstanding contribution in the Kargil war.
He captured two major posts in Mushkoh valley from the enemy.
The celebration of eighth Kargil Vijay Diwas was an occasion for him to relieve those triumphant moments, when he killed eight Pakistani soldiers on these icy mountain peaks.
Says Lance Naik Sanjay Kumar, "We fired whenever there was a lull in their firing. Then we advanced with our guns."
For the last eight years, locals from Ladakh and Drass have been coming here to celebrate India's victory in Kargil war.
The armed conflict between India and Pakistan had taken place between May and July in 1999. Today, the LoC, where gunfights were once a regular feature, is peaceful.
Says Major General V S Tonk, "We have had a ceasefire since November 2003. It's been peaceful and we have used this opportunity to further consolidate and strengthen, our defences in this area."
It's been eight years since India won the decisive Kargil battle. Celebrations in Drass have become an annual ritual.
