New Delhi: Pakistan has pulled out troops from its Afghan border to beef-up its strength on the border with India and Indian Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor indicated on Wednesday that the threat of conflict is not yet over.
"Pakistan has moved some troops from its FATA areas to the eastern side. We are aware of this. That's happened. They have come to the eastern border of Pakistan with India. The Indian Army has factored this part in its planning," General Deepak Kapoor said.
It was the first admission by India that tensions with Pakistan have acquired a military dimension, that Pakistan has indeed moved its troops from the Afghan frontier to the Indian side, and that the threat of conflict is still very real.
While India still denies troop mobilisation on its part, it's military is clearly on battle alert. And it did not deny that some of its strike formations are not far from the border
"With the kind of tension I think certain amount of cleaning up of our defences to ensure that we are alert is to be maintained," said General Kapoor.
There are more indications that the military is taking the threat very seriously. Equipment procurement has been fast-tracked to war-time procedures
"It always happens that when a crisis is close by you do tend to make your procedures faster in trying to make sure that you are able to make up your deficiencies which may other wise put a constraint on your fighting capabilities," he said.
Concern was also expressed about Pakistan's nuclear weapons.
But General Kapoor said, "They are a source of worry. But we hope that they are secure."
It seems that the stand-off is not getting over soon.
