Srinagar: Army Chief General J J Singh on Friday gave away a glittering trophy to the troops of 17 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry regiment in Srinagar.
The Army Chief's visit to Kashmir comes at a time when it is beset with problems of infiltration and incidents of fragging. Perhaps, his presence would lift the sagging morale of the troops fighting militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.
"The Army is in itself going into the causes by having a court of inquiry done in every case and we shall come to a cause which triggered off an incident of this kind," General Singh said.
The Army Chief said he hoped that the India-Pakistan Foreign Secretary meeting later this month would address the Siachen issue and the joint mechanism on terrorism announced by Pakistan President Musharraf and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at Havana in September.
"I suppose in the next round of talks with the Foreign Secretary, they will go into more details," the Army Chief said.
Speaking on the damage control, he said that the Army is taking short-term and long-term measures. One of these is where officers are trained for developing a better relationship between the leaders and the led. "This helps reduce he gap is reduced between seniors and juniors," he added.
"At the same time, the pay commission would address some problems, there would be more married accommodation, and soldiers would be given medical attention, counseling. The Army loses more than 100 soldiers to suicides every year," the Army Chief said.
But General Singh maintains that there are fewer combat casualties now. "The Indian Army is also analyzing loss of soldiers, which is down by 30 per cent. The combat casualty has come down satisfactorily," he said.
Despite the Chief's assurances, 2006 seems to be a year the Indian Army wants to quickly get past.
