Srinagar: The Indian Army killed 13 terrorists in an encounter that lasted for over eight days at peaks over 15,000 feet in the inhospitable mountain ranges.

Chhamar Sar, a pristine lake 15,000 feet high in Bandipora district of north Kashmir, was the place where the Indian Army completed one of the longest encounters since the Kargil war killing 13 terrorists, who had sought refuge in the caves.

They were killed after a stand-off that began on September 24 and lasted till October 1.

But the going was tough, and the Army even had to air drop elite para commandos to do the job.

"The terrain was very tough. The fight was done boulder to boulder and the terrorist were effectively using the folds in the terrain and the available caves for their defence," Maj General VSS Gaudar, GOC, Kilo Force, said.

Army sources say the militants were headed for Kangan, 50 km from Srinagar. A huge cache of arms and state of art communication sets were recovered from them.

"In the initial encounter itself we had killed three terrorists and by October 1 we were able to kill all 13 terrorists. As on date we have been able to recover 11 bodies and are looking for two more," Maj General Gaudar said.

The Army might have successfully mopped up the operation but it is also wary what will happen if terrorists start to consolidate in the rocky features?

Will the Army go for a hot pursuit or just wait for terrorists to make errors and that is something the men in olive green will be re-looking at.
