New Delhi: An Army officer was arrested on Tuesday night on charges abetting the suicide of his wife, also an army officer, last year.
Captain Chaitanya has been charged with cruelty and abetting the murder of 26-year-old Megha Razdan. He will be produced in court on Wednesday.
Captain Megha Razdan, 113 Engineering Regiment, was found hanging from the fan at her home in the Kunjawani Army camp in July 2007.
There were injury marks on her neck, stomach and legs. A suicide note, supposed to have been left by her, claimed she was harassed by senior army officers.
The note also said she was unhappy with her life and wanted to leave the Army, but circumstances prevented her from doing so as her family could not pay off the money incurred on her during Army training.
But the note was later called into question as it was typed out on Megha’s laptop and was unsigned. Three months ago, police conducted brain mapping and narco-analysis on Chaitanya in Bangalore.
He is alleged to have tried to escape investigation by chopping off his tongue and enacting a drama of kidnapping.
Megha’s mother Shailaja Razdan says she is satisfied with investigations into her daughter's death. “I am satisfied with the action that the police has taken. However, I wish that he should not get the death sentence because it will be over too quickly for him. I hope he gets life imprisonment so he stays in jail for the rest of his life and suffers every moment. I still believe that the army is responsible for this as Megha's husband too was an army officer,” she said.
PTI adds: A team of police officers including Superintendent of Police (South Jammu) Zahid Manhas had investigated the case.
Megha was to go on one-month leave on July 8 and was planning to go to Pathankote in Punjab on July 10 to visit her parents Anil Razdan, an officer in BSNL and Shailja.
She was also planning to go to meet her-in-laws at Kohlapur in Maharashtra along with her husband.
On June 15, 2006, Lt Sushmita Chakarvarty had committed suicide at Northern Command headquarters at Udhampur and police was yet to complete its investigation.
