Srinagar: There is an uneasy air in the streets of Kashmir. Anger and alienation are back on the streets due to some unsavoury incidents involving security forces.
There are a policemen recovering in hospitals due to brawl with armymen in roads and backyards.
A number of incidents involving the army over the last three months are taking its toll.
With the people's anger increasing, retaliation by security forces is getting harsher.
A resident was so angry with the law enforcers that he tried to stab some of them.
“They just come and listen to us and go away. They do not make any inquiry,” says the resident.
A group of armymen stormed a police station and beat up some policemen last Thursday when they were refused some stocks of kerosene.
The same day, some CRPF personnel shot dead a boy in Pulwama, after he refused to give them some apples.
On September 13, armymen beat up villagers who were protesting against incidents of molestation by soldiers.
And on June 27, two army jawans who allegedly tried to molest a girl in Bandipore were beaten up and paraded naked by local residents.
The army has been maintaining that elements close to separatist quarters always try to incite trouble whenever there is an aberration by its men.
But top police officers admit privately that security forces at times extend their brief while dealing with law and order situation to offset their efforts to bring in calm in Kashmir.
“Yes, of late in short time there have been two or three incidents, I would say aberrations, which were avoidable. Action will be taken against those people erring in the matter,” says IGP Kashmir, S M Sahai.
