Bangalore: Twenty-year-old Mohammad Mukhram could've lived today. But fate, in the form of the fear of getting scolded, intervened.

The college student was out with a friend, speed-biking and trying out wheelies on MG Road, when he saw police barricades.

Police commissioner Shankar Bidari said, “Police officers signaled to stop. They tried to turn around and go away. The motorcycle skidded and fell. Then they ran away.”

As luck would have it, Mukhram ran into Fagstaff House, the home of an army brigadier and managed to climb on to the terrace. Sentries heard him talking on his phone. They asked him to surrender, he jumped down, and tried to scale the wall.

Army sentry Manoj said, “I saw the victim was running along with few army men chasing him. There was an alert sounded and when he did not stop, we had to fire.”

The second round of bullets hit Mukhram. Possibly some friends he had called for help, rushed him to a nearby hospital.

No doubt, it was Mukhram's mistake and maybe the army officials acted as they thought best, but the obvious question is - were they overreacting? Could they have handled it differently?

At his house, Mukhram's family is too shocked to talk, to scared to file a case. .

The families of the victim said that the army sentries could have shot him in the leg. And not have killed him.

Army officials have filed a case of trespassing, and police are hunting for Mukhram's friend who was riding pillion on this bike late Saturday night.

The police insist that he if only he had submitted to traffic police who had put up barricades or to the sentries who had warned him, things would've been different.
