New Delhi: There is talk about the slowing down of the art market but that hasn't stopped publishers and galleries creating a rush of art books published today.
In fact, this year has seen a maturing in publishing styles and it can be safely said that now is the time to invest in an art books collection.
In most art openings today, art lovers not just get to see the works but also copies of a book on the works of the artist.
Art Publications in India has, for decades, been the stronghold of a few selective publishers in the country, one of them being 55-year-old Marg Publications.
The company’s GM Radhika Sabavala, said, "When it is put together, it should be referred to for years, not dated but timeless."
But Marg's works are often criticised of being too academic. And so, to make up for that are glossy art books brought out by galleries like Art Alive, Art ‘n’ Soul and international publishers like Albin Michel. However, experts warn – don't just go by the gloss.
Art critic Alka Pandey says, "Things which are just looking good will fall off. They have to have a gravitas to keep the publication in place."
Publishing has certainly come a long way. With a clever combination of gloss and content, it's a bit difficult to gauge the price appreciation of the books right now. However, a collector's item never fails to be an investment.
Some of the books released this year may be banked upon:
- Centering Awareness (on Satish Gupta)
- Faces of Indian Art (on the history of contemporary Indian art)
- A Life in Art (on SH Raza)
- Ordre du Monde (on Sujata Bajaj)
