Art keeps me closest to India: M F Husain

New York: Two days after he turned 94, artist M F Husain, who is on a self-imposed exile over controversies surrounding his paintings offending sentiments, has ruled out returning to India. He said he misses his country but his art keeps him closest to India. He spoke to CNN-IBN correspondent Indira Kannan in an exclusive interview in New York.

Indira Kannan You're here working on something, tell us something about it?

M F Husain:This is like a gist of all my experiences, it is called a voyage to discovery. I have been working on it for five years now. I work on it off and on.

Indira Kannan Do you think there is some Indian artists right now who is really good?

M F Husain: There is tremendous talent in India. Over the last few years Indian art has started being noticed not only within India but all over the world because of such talent.

Indira Kannan How do you feel now that you realise you can't go back to India?

M F Husain: I am in India, I don't have to be physically there.

Indira Kannan Don't you wish the Indian Government would do something to get you back to India?

M F Husain: Any normal human being would want that.

Indira Kannan How do you feel now that you haven't been to India since so long?

M F Husain: I have been living like this for 60 years so I don't feel any difference at all.

Indira Kannan You attended the Sotheby's auction on your 94th birthday. What did you think about it?

M F Husain: I went there to see other artists' work. It had nothing to do with my own work.
