Art, medium of healing for riot victims

New Delhi: It's been four years since the riots in Gujarat took place. Today, through the help of an organisation called Himmat, some survivors have managed to recover from the trauma and have moved on to tell their story through works of art.

The paintings talk through colours about the problems they faced while they were displaced and how Himmat changed their lives.

Their works reflect the gradual healing process – the education of their parents, the new-found independence of young widows, problems that they faced in the overcrowded Shah Alam camp and water shortage that still persists even in their relocated residences.

"We have shown how we faced water problems and other things. We have also mentioned the problem of illiteracy," a riot victim, Tahira said.

"We learnt painting, stitching and embroidery here (at Himmat)," another riot victim, Rabiya said.

To get a feel of what the Gujarat riot victims went through and how they gradually picked up the threads of their life to spin a new one together visit Khoj Studios, New Delhi where an exhibition of their works is on till October 31.
