New Delhi: If you've got an overdose of canvas paintings and want to make an affordable switch then invest in works on paper.
The types of works on paper are pen on paper, chinese ink, charcoal, conte, graphite or dry pastel.
Paper is much delicate than canvas, so more care is required. The problem is with yellowing. The minute you see a yellow spot, rush to your restorer.
Maintainance of works on paper:
- Deacidification retards the yellowing of paper
- Avoid direct sunlight because that makes the paper brittle
- Avoid humidity to prevent fungal growth
- Add lining of another paper or shiffon behind the original work to add strength
With new age media and audio-visual trends in art taking over, drawings are becoming rare and that’s makes them a collectable today.
"Artists used do draw much more than now. With technology taking over and computers too, there is not much around," says an art collector, Renu Modi.
There is a myth that drawings are incomplete works. A drawing is a significant piece where an artist first puts the idea. So they should not be disregard as incomplete since they are worth a lot.
Here are the names to watch out for:
- Jogen Chowdhury - 21 lakh
- F N Souza - 16 lakh
- Akbar Padamse - 9 lakh
- M F Husain - 8 lakh
The catch here is that none of these artists’ canvases sell for less than 40 lakh.
