Ahmedabad: A new academic year has begun at the Fine Arts department of the Maharaja Sayajirao University but it was not a very happy occasion

Students staged demonstrations and demanded the return of their suspended teacher Shivaji Panikkar. Panikkar was suspended for allowing an in-house exhibition of nude paintings by Chandramohan, a student. The dean, Deepak Kannal, who has resumed duty, says the university should reconsider the decision to suspend Panikkar.

"Jo cheez mere absence mein hui mein uske baaren mein bolna pasand nahi karoonga, Kuyunki uske details mujhe pata nahi hai. Mein bhi chahta hun ki mere colleague ko jarror wapas liya jaaye, " said Kunal. (I would not like to comment on events which happened when I was not there. I would like my colleague to return)

The faculty wants action against VHP activists who attacked an exhibition at the university. “We demand action against people who attacked us," said Abha Sheth, faculty member, Fine Arts Department, MSU.

The exhibition of nude paintings held on May 9 had kicked off a row as saffron activists disrupted the show claiming it hurt religious sentiments. Chandramohan, whose work was objected to, was arrested and kept in police custody for six days. The chains of events had sparked off protests by students and artists alike.
