New Delhi: Following China's claim for parts of Arunachal Pradesh, the state has become priority for the government.

The prime minister on Thursday unveiled an ambitious Rs 10,000 crore development programme for the state.

Strategically significant was the plan for a trans-Arunachal highway, running for more than 1,800 km, linking up remote parts of the mountainous state.

The priority is being given to border districts and the next two years will all the villages on the border being electrified.

State capital Itanagar will get a brand new airport while existing airfields in the border districts of Daporijo, Along, Tezu and Walong will be substantially upgraded. Tawang will have a daily helicopter service from Guwhati.

The newly-inaugurated Dibang hydel project would also enable the state to generate more than Rs 300 crores in revenue every year.

The prime minister said these infrastructure projects would bring Arunachal closer to the rest of India.

On Friday, Manmohan Singh will spend time with his troops and will visit the Kibithu border post in the Walong sector. His itinerary does not include Tawang but the visit and Thursday’s announcements were calculated to send the message across the McMahon Line – that no matter what China may claim, Arunachal is indisputably Indian.
