Dr Rajesh Talwar may finally be able to walk free as after almost two months of questioning and several tests later, the CBI has finally admitted to having no evidence against the doctor.
But all is not well for him just as yet.
“CBI hasn't given a clean chit to Dr Rajesh Talwar but has only said that there is no evidence against him,” said CBI director Arun Kumar.
For a couple who lost their only child, life could not have been more cruel. Even before the news of their daughter death could sink in, Rajesh and Nupur Talwar were facing all sorts of questions.
The family was the prime suspect, with the needle of suspicion turning towards Rajesh, who was arrested on May 23 on the basis of circumstantial evidence. Apart from charging him with two murders, the police maligned him with charges that were never proved.
The UP police press conference only added to the chaos. “He was having an extramarital affair with Anita Durrani that Aarushi and Hemraj knew about,” said IGP Meerut, Gurdarshan Singh.
But when the Noida police could not get anywhere, the government put the CBI on the job, stating the police did a shoddy job. Talwar was put through several tests to ascertain his involvement in the case. Every time, he went to court, his bail application was rejected and his judicial custody was extended further.
Meanwhile, his wife Nupur fought a continuous battle from outside, pleading his innocence whenever she got a chance.
On Friday, the case went back to where it started. There is no sign of the mobile phones or the all-important murder weapon.
